Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also referred to as VoIP Phone, Digital Phone, Internet Phone or Broadband Phone, is a way of making regular phone calls over a Broadband High Speed Internet connection instead of a regular telephone line. You simply pick up your phone, dial a number and talk just like you would with a traditional phone service. It doesn't matter if the person you are calling has a VoIP phone service or a traditional phone service as this is all taken care of by Northland Connect.
How Does VoIP Work?
Voice over IP is a way of calling via the IP network, otherwise known as the Internet. A call is made through an
Internet connection either to a VoIP line or a traditional phone line.
Your voice, which is an analogue signal, is converted to digital data which is then disassembled and transmitted through the Internet only to be re-converted and re-assembled back to an analogue signal on the other end.
What Kind of Equipment Do I Need?
A Northland Connect internet connection is required.
Our VoIP service gives you the option of using a VoIP phone, or you can use a traditional phone connected to a VoIP ATA adapter.
VoIP phones plug directly into your broadband connection and operate largely like a traditional telephone.
ATA -The simplest and most common way to use VoIP services is through the use of a device called an ATA
(analog telephone adaptor). The ATA allows you to connect a standard phone to your Internet connection for use with VoIP. The ATA is an analog-to-digital converter. It takes the analog signal from your traditional phone and converts it into digital data for transmission over the Internet.
VoIP capable phone - These specialized phones look just like normal phones with a handset, cradle and buttons.
But instead of having the standard RJ-11 phone connectors, IP phones have an RJ-45 Ethernet connector. These phones are made for use over your Internet connection.
